"New is always better" (Barney Stinson) or sustainability?
What makes us happy and why?

It can be refreshing to buy something new. No signs of use, modern design, latest features and warranted function for a couple of years.
On the other hand, it's a good feeling to have stuff with a long lifetime, because you probably won't have to deal with any problems for a long time.
Some things, like mobile phones, notebooks and PCs evolve pretty fast, which is why people replace them every few years.
Other things like dishwashers, washing machines and fridges don't change that much, which is why they should live as long as possible.

But is a product's long lifetime good for a company? A company would have to earn the same amount of money by selling less products per period of time.

On the other hand, people might prefer long lifetime products.

 

Sustainability becomes more and more popular. There are companies reselling used smart phones, there are repair cafés with volunteers repairing other people's stuff, ...

 

My opinion:
I think, PCs are reaching the limit of human perception. With 4K or 1440p resolution, people can't see pixels from the intended distance anymore and > 100 frames per second are barely noticable.
Efficiency could improve, but that's pretty much it.
Smart phones didn't improve very much over the last few years, except for faster processor performance, people don't really need in a phone.
So from a consumer's point of view, I think, sustainability is the way.
But how to make this profitable for companies? I guess, I will have to think about this for a while...

One thought I had reading this is that companies could rethink the idea of always selling more and more and therefore also shortening the lifespan of products and their compatibility with new items. Aren't there ways to add value to people's lives other than more stuff?

There are ideas out there like a circular economy. Maybe enough is already enough and it doesn't have to be ever growing profit.

People don't need more stuff. They need the same amount of stuff but working stuff, which is up to date.
Maybe something like leasing stuff would be good for sustainability. The longer a product works, the longer it can be leased to customers and the better for the company's profit.
And if someone doesn't need a product anymore, it will be used by somebody else.

Now a days buyers are not fool and marketing depends upon the mood of consumers besides previous Era's products priority.
