In the main, workshops and courses are held to allow for education in a particular subject matter. They can be exploratory in scope or operate within highly defined areas, but they all have in common the idea of personal progress in some way. For example, workshops and course in music could be aimed at beginners to allow them to try their hands at several different instruments. More advanced courses might be for tuition into just one instrument to enable intermediate players to gain advanced skills. Both workshops and courses are conducted throughout the academic year, and they are run formally and informally. Some require attendees to pay in advance for their tuition, whereas some work on a voluntary payment basis. Others, still, are completely free. Workshops and courses cover every area of life, from religion to car mechanics.

Abuse comes in many forms. It can be emotional, physical, sexual or psychological. It is something that people can do to themselves, for example, by abusing a substance or alcohol until they become dependent on it. In many cases, abuse comes from someone in power, whether that is formal or otherwise. For example, child abuse is often perpetrated by a parent, teacher or someone else in a position of authority. Abuse of prisoners or employees usually takes the same power relationship model. Of course, abuse can also relate to the way people speak to one another, for instance, by the use of abusive language. In other words, this is something that occurs in daily life in all societies and is often tolerated to some extent. Only in its worst forms is it a crime, such as the sexual molestation of a minor or the systematic bullying of a vulnerable adult.
Derived from the same root in Latin as 'acquiescence', acceptance is a related word which means being able to handle reality. Sometimes, it may be that you are faced with some personal problem which seems to be a much bigger issue than it is. By accepting it for what it truly is, it becomes possible to move on, psychologically speaking. In other words, acceptance is not merely putting up with things, or consenting to them, but managing them. As such, it can be much more proactive than you might think. Crucially, acceptance of a situation usually means dealing with a negative thought or condition without battling with it. That said, there are various forms of acceptance which come into play in different situations.
